Case Study: Fanless Panel PC

Fanless Panel PC for Heavy Machinery

Situation
A producer of industrial machinery installs small panel computers for operators to monitor progress and signal controllers. The computers are subjected to high levels of dust and wide temperature ranges as well as extreme shock and vibration. The company had a solution but was looking to reduce cost and improve performance by incorporating more common off the shelf (COTS) components. In order to avoid redesigning the operator consoles, it would need a supplier who could meet its specific space constraints.

Solution
Working with the customer, CCS was able to design a completely sealed unit (rated to IP 54 standards) with no moving parts. The components are all solid state and operate without the need for cooling fans. The custom chassis is a large heat sink that allows the unit to function in temperature ranges of -10° to 70° Celsius. All ports have industrial, waterproof connectors and custom labels are heat-, chemical-, and smudge-proof. The unit is extremely rugged in order to withstand the harsh environments where the machinery operates.

From Prototype to Production
After completing preliminary designs, prototypes were built and tested to meet customer specs. Now in run-rate production, CCS will also provide semi-annual servicing and inspections. Satisfied with its new higher performing, less expensive panel PC, the customer has approached CCS with another project opportunity.
